Anton Karas.
dadsamoviecritic:

Great trivia from ‘The Third Man’ (1949)…. Who is this man?  Don’t worry if you don’t know …few people do. His name is Anton Karas. Up until 1949, Mr. Karas was a little known Wine Bar performer from Vienna, who played the ‘zither’.  Your next question is probably… “what is a ‘zither’?”  The closest I can associate it to is a ‘mandolin’. Anyway after being discovered by Director Carol Reed, Mr. Karas spent six weeks in London recording the soundtrack for ‘The Third Man’ with the zither as the only instrument used.
After the film’s release, Mr. Karas became an instant International celebrity. In 1950; ‘The Third Man Theme’ spent 11 weeks as ‘Billboard’s’ #1, with Princess Margaret included as a big fan.  Afterwards, the catch phrase utilized was…. “audiences are in a dither over the zither”.
Who Knew….
